O God of Players CHANGE

By now, I hope you have all begun reading Julie Byrne's O God of Players for our discussion of the text on October 29. I've recently finished re-reading the book myself, and in doing so i realized Byrne covers a lot more ground than I remembered. She covers some issues we won't get to until later in class, which therefore wouldn't make any sense to you. So I am actually going to make this reading a little easier and break it up into two class session. For October 29, please read the Introduction and Chapters 1, 2, 3 and 4. We will shift the remainder of the book, Chapters 5 and 6 and the Postscript to November 5. I've adjusted the syllabus accordingly on the blog.

So, for Monday October 29, we'll be discussing pages 1-141 of O God of Players. As you read the text, pay particular attention to the tensions and relationships between Catholic culture and American culture. Are the two in conflict? Is there even a difference? Focus particularly on the Introduction and Chapters 3 and 4 as you ask these questions.
